Interest Groups

BOOK CLUB

The Book Club meets in the evening once a month at Timothy's on Lakeshore Rd. The titles are decided by all at the beginning of the year, and we choose someone new each month to lead the discussion with a bit of research on the author/plot etc. This is not a "serious" club where we attempt new heights of interpretation, but the exchange of ideas is always better when people share differing opinions! We also bring used magazines and books to recycle amongst ourselves. This is an informal, relaxed group who enjoy socializing.

BRIDGE CLUB

Enjoy a casual game with all levels of play. We meet the first and third Monday of every month in the afternoon. The location changes every month since members host the game in their homes.

FITNESS WALKING

The Group meets twice a week in the morning in downtown Oakville. This walk follows a route along the lake and through the residential areas and lasts about 45 minutes. We walk all year round, weather permitting, no walking in torrential rain or snowstorms! We also take a break on public holidays. Walkers of various fitness levels participate and slower walkers are welcome. When the walk is completed, we regroup for tea/coffee and a social time in the Town Square.

FRENCH CONVERSATION GROUP

Ever wanted to learn French but haven’t had the chance? Join in this French conversation group that meets twice a month in each other’s homes. One of our members, Michelle Landault Hanish, will be the instructor. She was born in France but has lived in Canada for quite a few years. We are very fortunate to have her leadership! To make sure you get all you can out of the class, Michelle will be speaking French at all times.

GARDENING CLUB

We meet once a month, Wednesday mornings, September through November, March and April, and twice a month May through August. Members take turns hosting, providing light refreshments. We usually have a relevant topic, speaker, or project for each meeting, and a plant exchange in the spring and fall. We also explore each other's gardens, to gain a bit of knowledge with unfamiliar plants or help with problems. There are some beautiful gardens, some "works in progress", and some who just have balconies with planters. It’s a great way to learn about growing conditions in a new area, while for those with brand new homes it’s an economical way to stock up. This group is made up of alumni as well as newcomers, so there’s plenty of expertise to go around!

HOSPITALITY & COFFEE MORNINGS

Our monthly Coffee Mornings held on the third Thursday of each month, September to June, are a great way to meet other newcomers in the comfortable atmosphere of the hostess' home. Everyone is invited to attend our monthly Coffee Mornings just bring along your coffee mug and name tag.

LAWN BOWLING CLUB

We meet from May until September and will be bowling at the Oakville Lawn Bowling Club (OLBC) at 111 King St. at Navy St., PO Box #69645, Oakville, ON L6J 7R4. The cost for full membership is only $100 per season. This is a joint group between the Oakville Newcomers' and Alumni Club Members for singles or couples. Free training and lessons for five days will be provided for new bowlers starting mid-May from Monday to Friday inclusive. New bowlers must attend sessions. The only equipment the new bowlers must have is a pair of flat/smooth soled footwear with no heel and no treads. New Bowlers are not required to join the OLBC until after completion of the free instruction. The New Bowlers' Programme will be open to first and second year bowlers and will run on Friday mornings at 10 AM from the opening of the season to the end of July. A schedule will be provided for other OLBC events and social activities. If you're looking to have fun, exercise and an opportunity to meet new people, then Lawn Bowling is for you.

LUNCH BUNCH

The Lunch Bunch meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month on our culinary voyage in and around the Oakville restaurants. We are all new to Oakville from different parts of Canada and abroad, we share many interesting stories and have lots of fun in the process, everyone is welcome.

MEDITATION GROUP

This is an invitation for all you spiritually minded ladies to escape the daily stresses and strains, to forget about the housework and shopping and just switch off from the outside world for a short while! Sound tempting? Why not join us for a relaxed morning of friendly conversation and a peaceful guided meditation! The meeting is on the second Tuesday of each month in the morning.

MUMS AND TOTS

This group is for moms and their children aged 0-5 (inclusive). We are subdivided into several playgroups, most of which meet weekly at our own homes or at parks and playgrounds. In addition, we plan two or three activities for the entire group per month, such as library visits followed by coffee, picnics and farm visits. Best of all, we have a Mums' Night Out once per month, usually at a local restaurant, but sometimes at a cooking class, private home, or wherever else takes our fancy.

NIGHT @ THE MOVIES

This fun group meets once a month at night at the AMC theatre in Oakville. The group decides on the movie to view when we meet and a lively conversation and discussion often follows the movie.

NITE OWLS

Nite Owls meets for dinner on the last Thursday of each month at different restaurants throughout Oakville and surrounding area. It’s a wonderful chance for all us ladies to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

POT LUCK NIGHT

We get together for a pot luck dinner the first Wednesday of every month. It’s intended for women only but we usually invite husbands around Christmas time. It’s a really fun and popular evening where members have the opportunity to try new dishes and exchange recipes.

PUB NIGHT / CULINARY JOURNEYS

We meet for dinner on the first Friday of each month, alternating between pubs one month and restaurants the next. This is a wonderful opportunity for spouses to join in the fun and we are always a lively, gregarious group. The location for our event changes every month and we try to rotate through the various communities in Oakville. Whether you are looking for a hearty pub meal, fantastic cuisine, or just a soft drink and conversation, this would be a perfect choice for sociable newcomers.

QUILTING CLUB

We extend an invitation to all our members who would like to get together with other quilters. It’s a great way to learn from each other and we welcome all types of projects. We meet the first and third Wednesday at 1:00pm in each other’s homes.

RAVINE SCRAMBLERS

The ravine walk meets every Friday morning (weather permitting). It is a brisk walk which usually takes about 45-60 minutes. We venture into the inner trail which involves two steep hills but don’t be put off, it’s well worth the effort! After the walk we all meet at a coffee shop, have a laugh and good chat about what has passed us by since we last met.

SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER

Do you enjoy eating out? Do you have time to dine with the girls on Saturday? If so, why not join me for dinner on the second Saturday of each month? Let’s have fun trying a variety of restaurants!

WINE APPRECIATION

Wine Appreciation meets on the third Friday of the month in different members’ homes. Husbands are very welcome, but not necessary. Everybody/couple brings a bottle and some nibbles and has fun chatting and slurping, with the common theme of wine (or sometimes beer) forming the structure of the evening. It’s all very light-hearted and you definitely don’t need to be a wine buff to come along.
